The good news: Australia’s Grandmaster ranks could be swelling (sort of) with 23 year old International Master David Smerdon having achieved his 3rd Grandmaster Norm in the Czechoslovakia Open. This means that he now only needs to increase his rating to the magical 2500 figure to become Australia’s 3rd locally bred Grandmaster. Go David! In other GM news, Serbian Grandmaster Dejan Antic has settled in Sydney, and one of the world’s best Blitz players, German Grandmaster Roland Schmaltz, continues his extended stay on the Gold Coast.

The bad news: Australia’s number 1 player for over 20 years, Grandmaster Ian Rogers, announces his retirement from competitive chess. He ends his career on a positive note, having just won the very strong Lidums Checkmate Open chess tournament with a score of 6/7.

The strongest chess tournament in Australian history, the Sydney International Open, exceeds all expectations. The joint winners are visiting Grandmasters, Georgy Timoshenko (Ukraine) and Dejan Antic (Serbia and Montenegro).

The April Holiday Program finished with many tired children, plenty of prizes and trophies given away and many lessons learned. A mix up at the trophy shop meant that the trophies were double their normal size! There weren’t too many complaints about that. For the latest photos, see the Photo Gallery.
